$5 billion and counting

Last year alone, more than 9.9 million Americans were victims of identity theft - a crime that cost them roughly $5 billion. Be proactive about protecting who you are:
• Review your credit report every year
• Shred and /or destroy all documents that contain personal information
• Report lost or stolen credit cards immediately
• Don't disclose credit card or other financial account numbers on a Web site unless they are a trusted site that offers a secure transaction.
• Memorize your Social Security number and passwords. Don't use your date of birth as your password and don't record passwords on papers you carry with you.
• Check out our Resources section for more great tips and thank you to the USPS for these.
