How to keep valuables safe while travelling
Posted September 1st, 2020 by SimpliSafe
With the global pandemic affecting many travel plans, more people are switching to staycations, where you holiday in your home country rather than jetting abroad. Whether you’ve been able to keep your original holiday plans or have had to adapt and opt for a more local getaway, holiday prepping should be as stress-free as possible. With everything else that goes into holiday planning, making sure your house is taken care of and secure is essential. So with that in mind, here’s our guide on how to keep your valuables safe while travelling.
Know what you’re leaving behind
You may have everything you need for your holiday and are certain there is nothing you’re going to leave behind (check out our ultimate going on holiday checklist) but it’s time to actually focus on what you WILL be leaving behind.
When you prepare for a holiday, it’s the perfect time to evaluate your home security and what valuables you have that you take for granted as always being there. Do you notice the keepsakes or irreplaceable items you have lying around or have they simply become part of the furniture (maybe even literally speaking)?
Start by doing a ‘valuables audit’, if you like, on your home. Check each room, including the garden, garage and driveway. For example, you may have an extremely expensive ornament that you take for granted when you leave it positioned in clear view from your living room window?
Do a perimeter check
Don’t forget to check the security around your house from the immediate vicinity to a broader one. When checking around your home, check any sheds or gates. How secure are they? Could they benefit from further security with a padlock on the inside lock for instance? If there are many valuables inside your shed, you could place them indoors for extra security. Do you take pride in your gardens? Are you the house on the street with all the latest outdoor gadgets? Are dashcams, sat navs or other electronic goodies on display in your car? These make prime targets for opportunistic thieves. Lock away these valuables inside for extra security.
For top-level security, set up whole-home protection with one of our home security systems as a fantastic deterrent to would-be thieves and burglars.
Extra security on valuables
No matter how much effort you put into keeping your valuables safe, if a burglar gets in your home, they’re going to make their visit count. That’s why it’s invaluable to set up some cameras and an alert system in your home to capture the intrusion. With our indoor home security camera, you can see and hear what’s going on in your home even when you’re away with flawless streaming from your smartphone, laptop or tablet through the SimpliSafe app. What’s better is that even when you’re away, the monitored alarm system will still request police dispatch when the incident is visually verified.
